Endomentrial Assessment by Transvaginal ultrasonography in Postmenopausal Women with Viginal Bleeding

Abstract
To diagnose postmenopausal uterine abnormal pathology, especially endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial carcinoma, endometrial curettage was used at past. But, recently most gynecologists tried to use transvaginal sonogram because of its non-invas iveness, simplicity and cost-effectiveness. In this study, comparison of ultrasound assessment and histopathology of the endometrium was made in 58 postmenopausal women visited in Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital on January, 1994 to August, 1997.
The results were as follows:
1. 58 cases of postmenopausal women were classified to 3 groups. 42 cases of them (72.4%) were belong to 5th and 6th decades.
2. The correlations of postmenopausal period, BMI, amount of vaginal bleeding, and ultrasonic pattern with mean endometrial thickness were not significant.
3. Mean endometrial thickness of endometrial hyperplasia or endometrial carcinoma (17cases) diagnosed by histopathologic study were 14.12 7.52 mm, which was significant statistically when compared with other pathologic findings. All of endometrial thicknesses of endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer were over 6 mm and there were no endometrial hyperplasias or cancers of which endometrial thickness were under 5 mm.
